Sui Generis

Ethnographic Museum of Friuli - Palazzo Giacomelli via Grazzano 1 Udine

from 1 March to 4 May 2025

Thursdays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The exhibition Sui Generis explores the feminine essence through the works of 5 female artists from Friuli Venezia Giulia: Laura Leita, Francesca Martinelli, Maria Elisabetta Novello, Anna Pontel and Debora Vrizzi.

The exhibition route develops in dedicated rooms, where contemporary art dialogues - through contamination - with the museum's permanent collection.

Each artist addresses the theme with a distinctive language. Novello's ash gives shape to the becoming of the word between love and destruction, Pontel's organic sculptures are inspired by kintsugi, while Leita's portraits explore the reappropriation of identity. Vrizzi's threefold project investigates family dynamics in the video Family Portrait, gender stereotypes in PMC Talent Agency with Emanuela Biancuzzi (©IANOGRAPHICSISTERS)and the ambivalence of the gesture of giving through origami made from gift cards from the Anti-Violence Centre. Martinelli's installation on ‘Bad Mothers’ evokes the ancestral figure of Lilith through reliquary-dresses while her cycle of paintings on canvas Baroque Anatomy contemplates a reversal of constituted power that rehabilitates the flesh in the sacred.

The works construct a choral narrative about the liberation of the feminine from stereotypes and social constraints.
