The collections held in Udine’s Musei Civici (City Museums) provide a rich and diverse exploration of Friuli’s historical, cultural, artistic and scientific heritage. Housed in historical buildings in the heart of the city, they comprise: Musei del Castello, home to the Museo Archeologico, Museo del Risorgimento, Galleria d’Arte Antica and the Museo della Fotografia; the Gallerie del Progetto di Palazzo Morpurgo, home to temporary exhibitions and archives relating to architecture and design; Casa Cavazzini, home to the Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, whose exhibits include the remarkable Astaldi and FRIAM collections; the Museo Etnografico del Friuli, with its extremely rich array of exhibits depicting Friulian society, culture and traditions; and, finally, the soon to open Museo di Scienze Naturali, which will house Friuli’s natural science collections.
In addition, there are several exhibition venues reserved for temporary exhibitions organized by the Musei Civici, or in partnership with them - Galleria Tina Modotti and Chiesa di San Francesco in the city centre, and Casa della Confraternita and Casa della Contadinanza, both located in the castle grounds.
