Summer 2023: Exhibitions

1) Sotto l’ala del leone di San Marco. Gli incisori veneti nella Patria del Friuli 1420-1797 (Under the Wing of Saint Mark's Lion. Venetian Engravers in Friuli 1420-1797) Gallery of Ancient Art (Castle of Udine, second floor) until 1 October 2023 The exhibition presents a selection of illustrated editions and engravings ranging from the 16th century to the end of the 18th century, recounting the importance of the Most Serene Republic of Venice as a centre of chalcographic and typographic production and its fundamental contribution to Friulian artistic culture. The exhibition, curated by Giuseppe Bergamini and Isabella Reale, completes the programme of activities proposed by the Association on the anniversary of the annexation of the territories of Friuli by the Venetian Republic, with the aim of focusing on the lively cultural and artistic intertwining that took place with Venice between 1420 and 1797, emerging from the analysis of engraving production and illustrated publishing. The main protagonists of the Venetian engraving tradition who worked for Friuli include Jacopo and Isabella Piccini, Andrea and Francesco Zucchi, Antonio Baratti, Marco Alvise Pitteri, Giambattista Brustolon, Marco Sebastiano Giampiccoli, Vincenzo Giaconi, Francesco Novelli and Giannantonio Zuliani. These are flanked by Friulian-born authors who were a source of inspiration for Venetian artists and illustrators, who are present here with precious and rare editions such as the Teatro della memoria (1550) by Giulio Camillo known as Delminio and Viaggio da Venetia a Costantinopoli (1598) by Giuseppe Rosaccio, and among the rarest editions on display is Istoria delle turbolenze della Polonia (1774-1775) that the author, Giacomo Casanova, wanted printed in Gorizia. The exhibition is organised by the Triennale Europea dell'Incisione in collaboration with the Municipality of Udine (Civici Musei), the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Friuli Foundation and under the patronage of the University of Udine. 2) Trame antiche e moderne (Ancient and Modern Warps) Ethnographic Museum of Friuli (Palazzo Giacomelli, via Grazzano 1 Udine, rooms 6 and 7 ground floor) until 17 September 2023 The exhibition is curated by the International Centre for Textile Research (CIRT APS) of Villa Santina and is the result of the "Weaving and Traditional Costume Workshop of Friuli" held this year at the Ethnographic Museum of Friuli. The project focuses on the museum's textile collections. A theoretical and practical didactic method enabled course participants to study the museum's rich textile heritage, as well as the Quaderno dei tacamenti (drawings for textiles dating back to 1884), Antonio Di Croce's Campionario dei Tessuti (sample book of fabrics), and the four pairs of traditional costumes from Resia, San Pietro al Natisone, Aviano and Marano Lagunare presented at the 1883 Udine Provincial Exhibition and which formed the core of the small Costume Gallery set up in Udine Castle in 1906.

First World War: Photographs from the Museum of the Risorgimento, Udine

In Room 7 'of the Great War' of the Friulian Museum of Photography (Udine Castle, third floor) are exhibited some photographs, belonging to the collections of the Museum of the Risorgimento (Castle Museums) in Udine, depicting some military plants and theatres of the First World War such as the Monte Grappa massif. Until Sunday 1 October 2023

Archduke Franz Ferdinand's Funeral Carriage

Through detailed archival research, the curators of the Civic Museums of Udine have reconstructed the provenance of the funeral carriage which has belonged to the Municipality of Udine since 1931 and is preserved in the storage of the Ethnographic Museum of Friuli. Most likely it is the same carriage that, on 2 July 1914, transported the body of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Habsburg during the historic homage that the city of Trieste paid to the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne in the turmoil that paved the way to the outbreak of the First World War after the Archduke's assassination in Sarajevo. The management of the Civic Museums of Udine hopes that the carriage can soon be restored with the contribution of some patrons.
